“It’s the economy, stupid,” was a phrase widely used during Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential campaign against George H.W. Bush. For a time, Bush was considered unbeatable. The phrase, coined by James Carville, refers to the notion that Clinton was a better choice because Bush had not adequately addressed the economy, which had recently undergone a recession.
In order to keep the campaign on message, Carville hung a sign in Bill Clinton’s Little Rock campaign headquarters with the following three points:
- Change vs. more of the same
- The economy, stupid
- Don’t forget health care.
Bill Clinton did get elected President and orchestrated a dramatic decrease to the US deficit and growth in the economy. As you can see by this graph, and your own experiences, the junior Bush followed in the senior Bush’s footsteps:

So, how do we get out of this. I know that Hillary Clinton has a plan, and the support, to do this. It isn’t going to be easy, but it can be done. Bill Clinton proved that when all of us were saying it would be impossible in 1992. Hillary understands that there is a serious problem that needs to be resolved:
